Founding Story
When good intentions go to waste
Emoot founder, Nicola Claxton, reimagined the system so value is never left unused or disconnected from intention.
The Hidden Waste of Good Intentions
Nicola’s journey began with a common but frustrating reality: gift cards scattered throughout her life. They sat forgotten in her kitchen drawer, and showed up in unexpected places like under the bed. Sometimes forgetting even who they were from and on what occasion.
Each one came from a good place. A birthday, a thank you, a thoughtful gesture meant to spark joy and connection. Yet over time, they all followed the same pattern. Half-used. Misplaced. Tied to stores that held little relevance.
So she looked into it.
One in three gift cards is never used. Millions of dollars a year, given with intention, never actually reach the person they were meant for. Instead, they sit idle or end up as plastic waste that nobody recycles. What was meant to feel thoughtful was quietly becoming wasteful.
A Need for Genuine Connection
In a quiet moment of reflection, something clicked.
It wasn’t the gift card people valued. It was the feeling behind it. The intention. The desire to connect, to show care in a tangible way.
But cash didn’t solve the problem either. A simple bank transfer feels transactional, more like settling a bill than giving a gift.
That’s where the gap revealed itself.
There was no option that combined the emotional weight of a gift with the freedom and usefulness of money. Nothing that allowed generosity to feel personal while still being practical.
The question became simple: why doesn’t this exist?
That was the shift. Not improving the gift card, but rethinking the entire experience. A way to transform transactional cash into a digital gift-opening experience. Something that carries meaning, not just value.
Embracing Joy
Emoot is inspired by the Finnish word “emootio,” rooted in emotion and human experience.
From the beginning, the vision was clear. Make giving feel the way it’s supposed to. Not restricted. Not impersonal. But human.
Because giving has never just been about money. It’s about the moment around it.
A New Way to Give
Nicola founded Emoot in Vancouver, BC with one goal: to make giving money feel as good as it should. That is also why she named the business Emoot, inspired by a Finnish word for “emotion,” to reflect the idea that money carries feeling, not just function.
Emoot allows people to send more than money. A voice note. A photo. A video. A message that captures the moment and the reason behind it.
It arrives directly in someone’s bank account, right when they need it most. But it does not feel like a transfer. It feels like a gift that was actually thought through.
No plastic waste and forgotten gift cards.
Just something that lands, both practically and emotionally.
